Facebook Now Allowing The Removal Of Original Page Admins

Remove Page Admin IconIn a subtle yet significant change for Facebook Page owners, the original creator of Pages can now be removed as an administrator by any other of the administrators of that Page. This was a serious issue for a number of companies who were looking to shift control of their Pages from a third-party company to someone internal. In other cases, Pages have been sold but administrators have been forced to stay the same. Regardless of the rationale for removing an administrator, doing so was never possible, until this weekend.

Facebook Pages have become the center of Facebook marketing campaigns for small, medium, and large businesses alike. Combined with Facebook ad campaigns, custom tabs, and ongoing user-engagement, Facebook Pages serve as a tool for building community, and often times result in more loyal customers, if the most recent surveys about Facebook Page customer conversion are accurate.

While the ability to remove the original Facebook Page administrators may seem like a small upgrade, it’s a feature that many Facebook Page owners have been asking for since Pages first launched. Thankfully, it’s now available. You can manage your administrators by clicking on “Edit Page” on the left-hand sidebar of your Facebook Page and then scroll down on the right to add and remove administrators.

Facebook Appears To Back Down On Landing Tab Limitations

-Landing Tab Money Icon-Less than 24 hours after we first covered Facebook’s decision to limit landing tabs within Facebook Pages to “authenticated” admins, the company has appeared to revert back to the original permissions, making landing tabs available for anybody. The change was rapidly criticized by more Page administrators who use landing tabs as an easy way to convert new visitors into fans.

While we’ve reached out to the company for clarification about whether or not this change back to the original settings is permanent, we still haven’t heard back from the company regarding their policy on the new “authenticated Pages”. We’ll be sure to update if we hear more from Facebook, however there’s no doubt that many Page administrators will be grateful that Facebook has stepped back from what would otherwise be a permanently damaging change.

Facebook’s motivation behind the change wasn’t exactly clear, however we speculated that it was to reduce spam and potentially increase revenue. For Facebook to make such a significant change without any formal notice, aside from an update to the developer forum, is pretty significant. At this point Facebook appears to have gone back to the original settings, enabling anybody to set a custom tab as the landing tab, however we’ll have to wait to hear back from Facebook to confirm that this change is permanent.

Facebook Adds An Unlike Button For Pages

Unlike IconNo longer a fan of something? Facebook just made it easier to “unlike” your favorite Facebook Pages through the embedded fan box widgets. While many users have actually requested that Facebook a full functioning “Dislike” feature to express negative sentiment, this feature is simply an easier way to not be a fan of existing Facebook Pages that you like.

Why Facebook would add the unlike button is unknown but many Facebook Page owners have been complaining to us about the feature this morning. Previously, it was pretty difficult to “unfan” (now called “unlike”) Facebook Pages from external websites and even within the Facebook Page itself.

Making it difficult to “Unlike” a Facebook Page was great for Page owners who wanted to rapidly increase the number of fans they had. One could argue in support of Facebook’s addition of “Unlike” as a way to more accurately reflect a user’s interests. However this is much more of a stretch.

While I’m not sure that we’ll see a massive response from Facebook Page administrators against this change, there’s no doubt that many will be frustrated. Do you support Facebook’s decision to add an “Unlike” link? What do you think the impact will be?

Facebook Post Insights Go Live

This evening Facebook began rolling out the new post insights product that we wrote about earlier in the week. The service is extremely simple. It lets Page administrators find out how many impressions each story on their Page receives and what percentage of those impressions result in action (likes, comments, or clicks). While not all administrators are seeing them yet, Facebook is expected to roll them out quickly.

Often times when you post something to your Facebook Page, you have no idea how many people are seeing your story and/or clicking on it. It’s a minor upgrade but it presents a ton of value and it’s something that the competing service, Twitter, doesn’t provide for brands. Knowing your impact is critical. How accurate the new post insights are actually is unknown since Facebook is the one providing the analytics and the one controlling the stream.

We’ve found a fairly narrow range of impressions among our own analytics (as pictured below), however we haven’t had the chance to speak with other administrators about what types of numbers they are seeing. We also don’t know what Facebook is considering an “impression”. For example, if I load a stream which includes a story but don’t scroll down far enough to see that story, is it included as an impression?

There are still a lot of unknowns about the improved post insights product but we’d expect Facebook to provide more details about the upgrades in the near future. Are you seeing the new post insights? Do you find think they are accurate? What sort of numbers are you seeing?

-NutshellMail Logo-Great news today for Facebook page administrators—NutshellMail, a service that allows users to track updates from several social networking sites through an email aggregate, has added an automated newsletter feature that will assist administrators in keeping fans up to date on the latest fan page updates.

NutShellMail’s web site claims that creating and adding an email newsletter to your page can be completed in under a minute. After adding the application to a fan page, the administrator can simply add an additional tab (”Email Newsletter”) and start promoting away. The application’s interface is basic enough for almost any fan page administrator to implement the service.

There’s little doubt that NutshellMail’s newest feature will increase the potential for fan engagement. Casual Facebook users may not visit all of their pages everyday or keep track of the latest updates, so aggregates of the updates will help almost any Facebook user stay in the loop.

What are your thoughts on NutshellMail’s newest functionality? If you’re a fan page administrator, do you plan on implementing it into your fan page? Below is a screenshot of NutshellMail’s newsletter functionality as published by Techcrunch.
