Scene It? Movie Game Now On Facebook

Scene It?, a DVD board game that tests your movie and general entertainment knowledge, now has it’s own Facebook edition, complete with thoroughly addictive game mechanics and additional upcoming social features that could rival some of the more popular “ville” types of games. The Facebook edition follows versions for three other platforms, which include Xbox, iPhone and of course the original DVD board game.

Whether or not you’ve played any of the other versions of Scene It?, if you enjoy movie trivia quizzes, you’ll probably love the Facebook edition, which started in trials in Nov 2009 and was soft-launched in Mar 2010, which includes a new tournament mode. Other details of the game, made by Screenlife Games, were revealed in a phone interview by the company’s SVP Development, John Hendricks, who in many cases hinted at upcoming features, unable to confirm certain features.

The Facebook edition currently uses Flash, like many other games on this site. While it incorporates puzzles from earlier versions, there are also complete new puzzles with game mechanics created specifically to take advantage of Facebook’s features, with timers and visuals (stills, movie clips pixelized scenes) that both challenge and entertain. (My favorite so far is the Six Degrees puzzle, based on the concept of the same name, also referred to as Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon in entertainment cirlces. This puzzle has you match up stars and costars in multiple films to connect the Six Degrees-based relationship between two actors, for example Will Ferrell and Will Wheaton.)

One very big social feature of Scene It? Facebook edition is asynchronous play. You can challenge friends to quizzes, which they can complete on their own time. Of course, this is a common feature amongst many popular Flash-based games on Facebook, though it was never possible in other editions of Scene It? Asynchronous play allows gaming to be more casual, to fit in with gamers schedules. There is also a tournament mode, which allows you to set up teams and win weekly prizes, including Apple iPods and Macbooks, and copies of the DVD board game edition.

Scene It? offers up both Glitz points and Screenbucks, the latter of which hints at the upcoming “meta game,” as Hendricks put it. You can earn both types of credits by answering quiz questions correctly, as well as buy more. Glitz points and Screenbucks can be purchased using PayPal or Trialpay. Screenbucks can also be purchased with Trialpay, credit cards or the ZONG mobile payment option. You can also earn Screenbucks by complete a variety of offers for Netflix, DVD clubs and more. Screenlife further monetizes Scene It? with sponsorships, movie DVD purchases, extended quiz plans (you can only play 5 quizzes daily), and a Bling shop that sells digital goods such as clothing accessories, homes, pets, vehicles and vacation for your avatar.

The digital goods are a piece of the meta game they’re testing. So if you prefer the FarmVille or Mafia Wars types of games, Screenlife is covering that angle in the future, at least according to hints by Hendricks. You can already pick a “career”, such as actor, writer, director, producer, then outfit your avatar with the aforementioned digital goods. I assume they’re waiting for more players before launching the game. Currently, the Facebook app has ~75,000 MAU (Monthly Active Users), from an original registered 300K testers from Nov 2009 — many of whom offered feedback that resulted in the current features. Additional crowdsourced feedback (which apparently comprises a long backlog of suggestions) will be incorporated into updates, and possibly some entertainment-related partnerships will appear that, shall we say, might give you more details about a movie before you make a purchasing decision?

Having never played the DVD edition, I still found the Facebook edition of Scene It? thoroughly addictive that I had trouble focusing on finishing this article. The iPhone edition ($0.99), which I tested on an iPad was entertaining but not as addictive. I’m waiting with bated breath for the upcoming iPad edition, whichcould easily be passed around as a game “board” in real life amongst a circle of family and friends.

whiteAs we reported over a week ago, the Facebook campaign to see Betty White host Saturday Night Live is growing exponentially: beginning as a grassroots plea by a single fan inspired by White’s recent mega-viewed Superbowl ad, this movement is now within reach of its goal. Entertainment Weekly reports that SNL is considering the beloved Golden Girl as part of a multi-host special episode featuring great Women of Comedy.

Although this rumor is not yet confirmed, sources cited in the EW article claim that former SNL superstars Molly Shannon, Tina Fey, and Amy Poehler might be co-hosting the show alongside Betty White. The as-of-yet-unconfirmed episode would surely draw in additional viewers who are Betty White fans, or who just want to see the power of Facebook groups put into action.

This move might signal the melding of online and offline entertainment and advertising. If the Facebook group Betty White to Host SNL (please?)! can mobilize its nearly 500,000 members to sway the execs at NBC towards Betty White, it could spark similar campaigns for other SNL host hopefuls, and an infinite number of spin-off causes geared towards letting the audience determine the entertainment they want to see.

-Jersey Shore Icon-Apparently Facebook users can’t help themselves from watching the train wreck which is MTV’s “Jersey Shore”. To be honest, I can’t either. Despite killing brain cells every time you turn on the show, it’s pretty entertaining. The Jersey Shore Facebook Page has almost quadrupled in the past month to over 475,000 fans and now there’s also a Facebook application in honor of the show.

The “What Is Your Jersey Shore Nickname?” application has grown to over 2 million monthly active users. The application does exactly what you think it would and that’s it! I installed the app and found out that my Jersey Shore name is “The Tan-talizer”. Oh yeah! So no, there is absolutely no value in any of this however it is most definitely entertaining! Best of all, you can watch all the episodes of the Jersey Shore online for free via MTV.

For example you can watch episode 7 and watch one roommate hook up with the other’s sister. All that the roommates in the show accomplish is go out to drink every night. Then they end up punching each other in the face or getting punched in the face as Snooki does. I honestly can’t say that I’ve watched all the episodes but you can just about guarantee that every episode has another great quote in it.

Are you one of the millions of Facebook users who are fans of the Jersey Shore?

-Pants On The Ground Icon-I had no idea what the phrase “Pants on the Ground” was referring to when I was sent an email about it this afternoon, but in under 24 hours, more than 74,000 people have become fans of the “Pants On The Ground” Facebook Page. 62-year-old General Larry Platt appeared on American Idol last night to audition with a song that he created.

After listening to the song one time around, I have to admit that I’m now hooked. The video is absolutely hilarious and I can understand why it has become so popular. General Larry Platt has come up with an insanely catchy song. The song lyrics are below

Pants on the ground, Pants on the ground,
You lookin’ like a fool with your pants on the ground.
With your gold in yo’ mouth with your hat turned sideways,
Pants hit the ground, call yourself a cool cat, lookin’ like a fool.
Walking downtown with your pants on the ground.

Get it up, get your pants off the ground.
Lookin’ like a fool, walking, talking, with your pants on the ground

The song is entertaining and General Larry Platt has a great intro to his song which you can watch in the video below. My guess is that the General has a great future ahead as his “Pants On The Ground” song has become a viral sensation.

“I’m With COCO” Spreads Like Wildfire On Facebook

-Im With COCO Icon-Thousands of Facebook users are rallying behind Conan O’Brien in the midst of his crisis as to whether or not he’ll stay with NBC. While the Facebook Page, “I’m With COCO“, was only recently set up, hundreds of users are joining every minute which means this Facebook Page could rapidly attract hundreds of thousands of users. The users who have joined so far are expressing their support via the Facebook Page’s wall in addition to switching their image to the “I’m With COCO” image displayed to the right.

Apparently numerous Tonight Show and NBC employees have changed their photos to “I’m With COCO”, which was originally created by Mike Mitchell. Mitchell is a professional illustrator who suddenly became inspired and decided that it was time to do something in support of O’Brien during this tumultuous time. Just while writing this article over the past few minutes, over 1,000 members have joined, and tens of users have posted wall posts.

The I’m With COCO campaign could soon become a viral sensation, although it will be difficult for it to keep up with the extremely popular Facebook Bra Color campaign that we covered last week. No matter what Conan O’Brien decides to do, it has become clear that the entire internet community has rallied behind the comedian, to show their support for him. The “I’m With COCO” image is an excellent work of art as it depicts the little bit of humor surrounding the situation, while allowing users to stand in solidarity with Conan.

While it’s unknown what NBC will decide to do, it’s clear that thousands of users are rapidly taking a stand, in turn making NBC look like evil-doers. You can show your support of Conan by joining the I’m With COCO Facebook Page.
